Real-Time Blade Damage Alarms
One of the objectives of monitoring wind rotor blades is to use the data continuously collected by the Sensoria system to generate real time alarms. These alarms notify users when the acoustic behavior of a blade deviates from expected variations related to normal wind turbine operation, including alarms for:
- Impact (no rupture)
- Skin rupture
- Impact & skin rupture
Alarms are communicated via email to a predefined group of personnel, including Sensoria’s highly-trained team of analysts. Analysts verify that acoustic data variations have crossed the required threshold by comparing current background noise response with the previous data point and the next data point to verify that the condition or change is sustained over time. This analyst verification step ensures that turbine operators know quickly when damage has occurred, while reducing the risk of false alarms.
Insights portal
Library of Previous Blade Damage Alarms
In the Sensoria™ Insights portal, users can see any relevant active alarms or heightened status, and add certain icons to the turbine tile, showing the need of the user to acknowledge the presence of an alarm, as well as the existence of a previously detected blade skin rupture.
Occurrence of any alarm is saved into the turbine database and the history can be easily accessed by the user, as well as filtered by alarm date and type. Alarm icons remain active and displayed for a predetermined period of time, and more drastic events are visible for longer time periods before the status is cleared.

Sensoria™ helps to indicate the need for additional inspection, maintenance, or repair work. When wind site operators need to supplement their on-site teams with more manpower, they have the option to request MISTRAS’ highly-trained and certified rope access technicians and drone pilots through Sensoria™ Dispatch. This value-added option enables wind farms to inspect and remediate detected damages to quickly return turbines back to normal operating conditions.
